Safari Spirit is run in partnership with Halo Gaia Adventure Travel who specialise in safari and dolphin retreats with renowned guest facilitators. Come and discover Southern Mozambique’s eco–tourism / Green & Conscious Travel ethos and learn about swimming with dolphins along the wonderful dolphin coast and its famously friendly wild pods of dolphins.

Tembe is a 300 square kilometre national reserve between Zululand and Mozambique and it is home to Africa’s largest elephants as well as the smallest antelope. It is also the ancestral home of the Tembe people who co-own and manage the Safari Lodge.

Their warmth of welcome and genuine desire to share their love of the land and animal kingdom with you is further enhanced by their excellent personal service. This is what makes it such a special place and you will soon find the outside world slipping away as you immerse in the Africa of legends adventure and myth.

You will be treated to exhilarating full morning game drives under the care and expertise of the local guides. Their deep knowledge offers superb opportunities to naturally connect with the magnificent wild herds of elephants, along with lion, giraffe, buffalo and rhino. You may even be close enough to look an elephant in the eye… After a delicious and generous brunch there is time to relax before being treated to another extensive game drive later in the afternoon. And as dusk begins to fall your driver and guide will take you to the watering hole hide where you can enjoy a leisurely sundowner as you marvel at the sight of elephants, antelopes, birds and natural wildlife coming together to drink.

Tembe Safari Lodge offers luxury tented accommodation on decks with en-suites and there is a delightful sheltered pool to cool off in after the heat of the midday sun. You can relax in one of the comfortable thatched lounge areas, enjoy a refreshing drink at the decked bar or just take time out to sit peacefully under the trees or wander through the camp where you will be further treated to close encounters with the herds of antelope that roam free.

Delicious 3 course meals are shared at night and while the wild bush babies rustle and chatter in the trees we are later captivated by the local Thonga people as they sing and dance their way through re-enacting their local folklore stories. What better way to learn about the African bush than to sit around a glowing campfire in the boma, under the night stars, and become part of the African heartbeat.

Only a short drive from Tembe, the border of Mozambique beckons as the bush turns into sand dunes and the pull of the pristine coastline calls you ever closer.

Transferring on to a convoy of 4×4’s we ride over the dunes to arrive and relish in the delights and luxury of the serene tree covered Tartaruga Tented Camp. It’s a private and exclusive tented camp that offers comfort, privacy and tranquillity.  The sound of the sea soothes and beckons and the endless expansive beach walks are only a few steps away. This area is an absolute paradise for nature lovers who just wish to be!

The morning encounters with the dolphins and whales start with the stunning walk along the beach to the nearby dive centre where we meet our highly skilled and experienced boat captain.  The exhilarating launch takes us through the surf and out onto the expanse of the open ocean, where tuning into the known patterns and behaviours of the local pods of dolphins, the swims take place with complete respect and only within the rhythms of their lives.  Courtney’s extensive knowledge of these dolphins and the local sea life ensures that you will have the most magical experience possible and this includes the chance to do some fascinating reef snorkelling.  Being out on the ocean with the sun sparkling off the sea is a truly wonderful experience in itself.  You may even be lucky enough to see the rainbows that form in the surf spray.

The joy of the morning dolphin launches will leave your afternoons free to explore the expansive beach, inland lakes and local village with its unique arts and crafts and you can also connect with the community through visiting their local school. In the afternoons, you can also join Sally as she shares group and personal Illumination Oracle Readings, foot reading and healing sessions, then as the sun begins to set you have the chance to experience her awareness meditations down on the beach. The evenings also bring the promise of exhilarating djembe drumming around the night fire as Courtney shows us the beats and rhythms of Africa so we can all join in to raise the vibration and drum away under the night sky. On our last afternoon at Tartaruga, Courtney will her weave her magical sound journey through the indigenous instruments and her beautiful voice, touching your heart and soul as you slip into the bliss of profound relaxation.

The generous brunches and 3 course dinners will be cooked by our talented personal chef who will delight you with her dishes and home cooked delicacies as we gather in the mornings and evenings around the table.

Leaving the oceans of Mozambique behind we head south towards the protected beauty of iSimangaliso Wetland Park. This beautiful space has been declared as South Africa’s first Natural World heritage site and is made up of lakes, interlinking ecosystems, swamp forest and coastal dunes.

We arrive later in the afternoon for a beautiful 2 hour sunset boat cruise where we can get respectfully, but incredibly close to the largest population of hippos in South Africa. You will be delighted as you see them playing in the shallow waters so close by and how the huge family groups hug together into the beds of reeds. But it’s not only about the hippos, you can see crocodiles sunbathing on the river banks, wild buffalo are close by and there are 526 species of birds to be spotted too. And as the sun begins to set you will be enchanted by the beautiful golden colours filling the sky against the dark horizon of the coastal forests.

Staying the night in the famous town of St Lucia within iSimangaliso, we will enjoy a leisurely evening meal together and then take a relaxed stroll around the town, where the local hippos are commonly seen taking a wander out on the streets too!

By the end of our time in iSimangaliso you will have truly understood why the translation of its name as ‘miracle’ and ‘wonder’ is so perfect for this special place.

After a relaxed breakfast we head towards Durban where the traditional elegance of Goble Palms Guest Lodge awaits us. Settling into this unique Edwardian Lodge that’s set high up on the ridge overlooking the city, we can enjoy its charming blend of tradition and luxurious comfort.

Each of the several guest lounges offers the added luxury of a complementary decanter of sherry as well as the daily newspapers. There is a delightful swimming pool where you can take a refreshing dip and tucked away under the eaves is their own quaint English pub where you can relax and unwind as you share your safari stories. For our last evening together we will dine out at one of Durban’s famous Indian restaurants.

In the morning we will gather together for one last time and enjoy a sumptuous breakfast served in the elegance of the dining room or out on the Colonial patio overlooking the pool with its impressive views down to the sea.

And as we say our goodbyes and return to our different corners of the world, we will take with us the memories and friendships that are the magic of Safari Spirit.
